Well, that's Jill's big birthday done and dusted!Smile

She was considerably cheered up by a receptionist who said “Oh I know what it's like. I remember when I had my 50th!”

(It's her 60th! Shhhhhh!)

I remember when I had my sixtieth birthday, but in truth I wish I could forget. Birthdays are so monotonous, they come round at the same time every year, wouldn't it be great if they stopped being mentioned at the age of fifty?

Nice family group picture Michael, I bet there wasn't a lot of the cake left. Smile

Ann-marie, my wife and I gave up on birthday cards and presents a few years ago. Instead we put away the money we would normally spend on these items, and then have a real night out when on holiday. This will involve dressing for dinner to suit the occasion, a really good restaurant and a beautiful meal, wine, port and brandy to finish off. It always costs a fortune, but figure if you can't totally spoil yourself twice a year then it would be a poor old world.

This is one of my pet hate subjects, how rarely people dress for dinner when eating out. I always sport a nice shirt and a tie with dress slacks and dark shoes, my wife also dresses for the occasion. I find it quite distressing to see someone in an upmarket restaurant dressed in jeans, tee shirt and sandals. Whenever we fly (internationally) we always dress very smartly, I have lost count of the times we have been upgraded to business class, solely on the way we are dressed, it really does pay huge dividends. Wink

Love the photos, Ciderman. Nice to have all the family around. I will be waiting by the front door for the postman with my bit of birthday cake.Laugh

'ME', I like the idea of putting the money aside and doing something you both enjoy. I'm with you, people don't know how to dress nowadays and it's nice to dress up occasionally. I have a friend in the village and she went to London earlier this year. She hated it because she felt over dressed. In fact she felt so out of place, she said she is never going to London again. I like the idea of being upgraded on a flight.Cool

I'm afraid dress standards have slipped terribly over the last generation of so. Please don't get me wrong, when around the house I can be so scruffy I look like something the dog dragged in.

When we fly out of Auckland in a couple of weeks, the new security measures mean we will have two or three hours at the airport waiting to embark. naturally we will head for the drink's lounge for a comfortable seat and relaxation. We have often noticed people catching planes who look like they have just come off the beach or a building site. Conversely, I can well remember when everybody dressed smartly to travel. I guess we are just showing our age by maintaining old standards but as already mentioned, it can pay the most surprising and welcome dividends.

I have had a lovely weekend. My sister come over on Saturday and went home late on Sunday.Laugh It was a short visit but it was still lovely to see her. She brought her college work with her because she needed some help with some graphics and she knew I could help. We got all the graphics she needed done for facials. So now she has a step by step guild for her teacher training, teaching classes. We got some nice walks in while she was here and we fed Petal and Rosie their apples. Elizabeth cooked dinner Saturday. It was really nice. She did pork fillet wrapped in Palma ham on a lentil base with veg. Tuesday she flies to Australia for 3 weeks.Cry

Ann-marie, I must ask, why are the animals on chains? I have never seen that before.

I'm just guessing but are they on an unfenced green area?

Doreen, you shouldn't mention tripe in front of a cow, it tends to get quite nervous … and then there is your onion!!! Embarassed

Ciderman was right. The green is unfenced and no one has cattle grids. Petal used to roam free but some townies moved in to the village and complained when she ate half their hedges. Here's a photo of the green. Petal and Rosie are moved around a lot so they get fresh grass every day.Laugh
