Angry or Furious

I am trying to think what is the difference between being angry and being furious..
At the moment I am neither of these two.
It is a pleasant Monday morning and I have a pile of work waiting to be done.
There are though times and sometimes quite often when I feel angry like when I bought Garlic from the shopping centre and when I got home unpacking it I saw that it had been grown in China.  We grow it here, along with onions and this had come all the way from China. I took it back to the store and told them my thoughts
…and then there are the neighbour's cats who do their business in my garden.
Of course I can’t blame the cats but I do feel angry when  I am kneeling down clearing up that stinky stuff.
Furious that is what I am when I get blamed for something I haven’t done or said,
Like being called wicked which I am sure I am not

Oh well never mind, have a  comfortable day.Smile

Well I am feeling tired but quite chirpy! Today seemed to have been the first real day of spring. We went to Kairakau beach, ( I mention that so those of you who frequent 'Google earth' can look at it from the air. I can provide some of the ground pics. Went for a picnic and a long walk along the beach with grandkids , daughter and partner. I shall be a good boy and post them in the photo section though.

Doreen, Michael and I live in an area known as the fruit bowl of New Zealand, whatever gets put in the ground grows. We have a very large cannery here in Hastings where i live called Watties, who are owned by Heinz. nearly all of the fruit they put in cans comes from China as do many of the vegetables. Local growers can't compete with the prices offered by China, even allowing for the fact the product is transported thousands of miles by sea.

If the local cannery used local produce the price to the housewife would skyrocket and she would not be at all happy. Frown

I too get angry when you go to the shop and all the fruit and veg is from Spain, Holland or Africa. You know it's in season here, so why are we importing it? There are plenty of people out of work. There's a job for them. I bet it's against their human right to make them work. Well there's my rant for the day – don't get me started.Yell

I feel for you Doreen. Cat using your garden as a toilet. I don't have that problem here but where I lived before it was a nightmare. You could not dig or plant in the garden without having to wear gloves. The little blighters buried it everywhere. It does get on your nerves when you don't have a cat. I found black pepper worked. I would sprinkle it down wherever they were going and all around the border. They don't like it getting up their nose but it doesn't hurt them. The only pain is if it rains it washes it away and you need to put more down. If there's no rain you can do it once a week. The cat will start avoiding your garden and go somewhere that does not have pepper.Laugh

Michael, I should explain the family my daughter married in to own a local cannery, my son-in-law is manager of that factory. At present they are canning cherries from California, the price of local produce is prohibitive. A can of fruit that sells at $2-00 will cost 87 cents just for the tin, that is without the labour and other costs to fill it. With most fresh fruit to buy in bulk from China is the only option for keeping the cost to the housewife acceptable, the labour cost of growing the product locally means it is out of the price range a cannery (or the consumer) can pay.

The same would go for the UK. Of course the home market can be supplied with home produced product, but would the housewife pay the extra cost? The goods you buy that are imported are only affordable (including transport costs) because of cheap labour. Sadly, on this issue, there is no middle ground.

As it's spring here, I am busy making a vegetable garden. I noticed on the weekend that a punnet of six lettuce plants cost $3-00, in summer I can buy a lettuce from the shop, in many cases cheaper than a baby plant … but the taste will not be as good.

Sorry Me, I know you've probably gone but Watties do not ever import fresh fruit from China. They would be crazy to do so when they can get it canned in China. If this is the case then the label clearly shows 'Made in China'. Otherwise all local fruit & vegetables are used.

Which cannery is your son in law involved in?

I grow my lettuces from seed. I've not done it before and I was very pleased with the results this year. I put more seed in the ground than I needed in case some did not germinate. But I had a 90% success rate which I think is very good and especially because it was my first time. They tasted lovely and they only cost £1.40 for 1300 seeds so good value too. I have lots of seeds left so I don't need to buy any next year. I will store the seeds in a dry cool place and they will be fine.Laugh
