Our horse chestnut trees (conker trees) are in danger. They are saying it could be a bigger disaster than the Dutch elm disease 30 years ago. There are two threats to the trees. First is bleeding canker but that's been here since 1970. But it is the recently arrived moth, laying leaf miner larva which is causing serious damage to the leaves and weakening the trees. Some trees had no conkers at all this year.
Here is a photo of a horse chestnut at Lacock Abbey. It's looking very sorry for itself. This is not autumn leaf loss, it was to early. It was caused by the leaf miner larva. I don't know if this tree will live for much longer which is a real shame when it's been around for about 200 years.

It's sad Annmarie! It's also one reason why people arriving in NZ get a much harder time from border control MAF people than customs. Dutch elm disease got here some years ago and we have an elm tree, which reaches over from next door providing a nice bit of shade in the summer. Our neighbour and us have joined forces to cut out affected bits each year and seal the cuts but it's only a matter of time.

We in the UK lost over 25 million trees to Dutch elm disease. We still have a good populion in Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, where there are around 15,000 trees. The local council are very proactive and any signs of disease is cut out and burned straight away. It is a shame to loose a large tree. I don't want to be impertinent, but you were most probably not cutting enough off the tree. It's a fungus so once you cut into it you infect your tools so it's a no win scenario.

We know it will go eventually Annmarie but the longer we can keep it the better. Cut is painted with 95% alcohol then latex sealer but you can bet there will still be infection even if you cut it off at ground level! The sap carries the infection around. Tools are sterilised too.

Well you're doing everything right, and you can't do anything more than you're doing.
