I was watching speed skating last night and the commentators were pondering why the new Zealand sports people wear black and was it something to do with the All Blacks (rugby). So I Googled it and all I could find is this. “A representative New Zealand team, since referred to as the Originals, first toured Britain in 1905. Reference to the team by the name “All Blacks” first appeared during this tour when, according to team member Billy Wallace, a London newspaper reported that the New Zealanders played as if they were “all backs” (referring to the speed and mobility of the forwards, a tradition continued to this day). Wallace claimed that because of a typographical error, subsequent references were to “All Blacks”. This may be a myth, as the name also describes their playing uniform of black shirts, shorts and socks.” Does anyone know if this is true?
