Ciderman I hope you let the Sergeant-major go and did not eat him. It's amazing what you can catch a fish with. Love the photo. Is that your mum?
Yep, that's my mom.

It looks like you had a great childhood. The photos make me think of Robinson Crusoe. Your mother looks like a lovely lady. It must have been hard for your mum and you with your dad in the Navy. He must have been away a lot.

Bermuda was great for all of us Annmarie. Dad was only on duty officer about every 4-5 days, when he was away overnight, otherwise he would be collected by an navy MFV from our jetty (we lived on an island called Blucks Island- only two houses on it) in the morning and delivered back in the evening. We were there for about 18 months of our 2½ years.

That does not seem like a bad life. It sounds great. It's a shame it could not have gone on for longer. It must have seemed like an 18-month holiday.

My tomato plants have gone crazy. I have hundreds of green tomatoes. If they all go red I don't know what I will do with them all. I'm going out to try and tie them up so I can find the tomatoes easier.

With surplus tomatoes you could make tomato chutney (delicious) or skin them, blanch them, and pop them away in the freezer to add to the pasta dishes you make. Spag Bol or most dishes made with mince are all the better with a little extra tomato, if home grown then they will be magnificent.
There are a lot of uses for extra tomatoes.

I like your ideas for my tomatoes. I've never made chutney before. I think it would be fun trying. I'm not a chutney or pickle girl. The only pickle I will eat is Branston Pickle and that's got to be the sandwich one. I don't like the big chunks. Before Branston brought out their sandwich variety, I didn't eat any pickle.

I make pickle! I eat it too but I usually distribute around the family, as it only worth the mess if you make quite a lot. I used to work for Unilever in Quality Control in Hastings (NZ). If things were going well, I wouldn't have much to do , especially on the night shift. They had a really good library and I would delve into books going back centuries about food. I used to copy occasional recipes out and take them home to try. The Mustard Pickle began:
“Take 23cwt of cauliflower…………
Needless to say, I scaled it down!

I like the idea of trying very old recipes. I suppose they had to find ingenious ways of preserving food because the were no fridges or freezers to keep it from going off. I have never made pickles before but I have made jams and it's the same process. Very messy so you might as well find the biggest pan and fill it, then you just have to get the jars.
I have retied my tomatoes up this weekend and I've started taking off some leaves to help them ripen. I have to say they taste much nicer then the ones you get from the shops.

I've never grown lettuce before but I thought I would try some in pots this year. I put three different types of lettuce in and yesterday I picked my first one. It was lovely. The cos lettuce 'Lobjoits green' has grown quickest and all three did well with germination. Dynamite lettuce 'Lactuca sativa' is coming on well but is growing slower then 'Lobjoits green'. But cos lettuce 'Pandero' is quit disappointing. They are a lot smaller and I found caterpillars eating them. Even though I have the different lettuces growing together in the same pots, 'Pandero' is the only one the caterpillars are eating.

In May I transplanted last year's baby strawberry plants in 2 growbags and Sunday I made more baby strawberry plants from the offshoots. Next year I should be overrun with strawberries which should be great. I'll be able to make lots of strawberry jam. Last year I bought 2 strawberry plants and now so far I have about 60 plants. Not bad. And I still have lots more to do.
