Beachcombing
A Third Age Free & Healthy Pursuits Feature
by our Interests, Hobbies & Pastimes Editor

Can you remember as a child how much fun it was playing on the beach? Can you remember how much pleasure could be gained from such simple delights as building sand castles, collecting shells or digging for what you hoped would be buried treasure?

Well why should things be any different now? Just because you’re in your Third Age, why shouldn’t you have just as much fun doing simple things as you did when you were a child?

Well you can. You just need to learn how again. One of the problems with today’s world is that we have forgotten how to have fun. Or at least, we have come to associate fun with money, so if something is free we place no value on it.

While the old saying “the best things in life are free” may not be wholly accurate, there are certainly a great many things that are free that are ‘amongst’ the best things in life. Having fun can be one of them.

So why not give Beachcombing a try. It’s healthy, it’s good exercise, it’s free, and we’ll bet you’ll have forgotten how much fun it can be!

Beachcoming or probably more, in my case, rivercombing is one of my delights. Because I am interested in fossils and rocks and our local rivers cut through tall limestone strata, there is always something to interest me. Then there are river worn tree stumps and floating bits of wood that I retreive either as garden ornaments, or, if they don't make the grade decoratively speaking they are firewood. Sometimes even trout! I am always at a loss if I see people just sunbathing at the beach. There are holes to dig, streams to damn, shellfish to dig for, seaweed and rocks to look under,(especially with grandchildren) . I was surprised when in Cyprus recently to see at least a thousand sun beds for hire in Larnarca. What's wrong with lying on the sand if you MUST lie in the sun but it's so boring!

Civilisation is a veneer, easily soluble in alcohol. http://cidermannz.blogspot.com/
