I have been a bit side tracked this week looking at chicken coops. I have ordered one and it's coming today – anytime now in fact. I can't wait. Then I just have to get my chickens. I'm going to get two chickens at the moment. I think I'm going to get silkies because I don't need too many eggs. I will be putting up photos and letting you know how I get on with this project. Meanwhile of course, any help or advice from our more experienced chicken keepers would be greatly appreciated!Laugh

Well the chicken house came on the day the company said it would. I have to say the service was great. It's so easy buying things on eBay and cheaper than the shops. It was flat packed, so we decided to leave it until today to put it together. It took about an hour to put together with its run. Well I'm really pleased. It looks great and all I need now is the chickens. I have an egg already.Laugh

Ann Marie, that is one fabulous looking coop, keeping chooks should give you endless hours of fun. Since moving to the city this is something I really miss, there is nothing like having a never ending supply of fresh eggs, and you will be surprised how many new friends turn up hoping for a egg donation.

If you are lining the nesting boxes, we did this by cutting up all our junk mail into 12mm wide (half inch) strips, the chooks found this very acceptable for nesting material. Keep them in the chook house for a few days then you will be able to let them out, especially if you set their feed time to be at a regular time each day, they will be ready and waiting. You may also be surprised just how quickly they become quite tame and will venture right up to you for a scrap of food. You now have a ready disposal unit for bread crusts and most vegetable scraps, chooks are very useful for food scrap disposal.

Just one last tip and this is important and I speak from a very unfortunate experience. When ever you touch the coop for clearing out or cleaning purposes or for supplying fresh water or food, be meticulously careful with your hand washing. Chooks are a primary cause of campylobacter, a really nasty form of food poisoning. Take my word it's very painful and debilitating, a problem that can take over a week to clear. The best way to avoid the problem is to always thoroughly wash your hands after you have anything to do with them, simple but totally effective.

This is a great hobby and I am very envious.

Thank you 'ME' for your helpful tips. I got a book about keeping chickens and I'm working my way through it. I thought it would be good to get a basic knowledge before getting the chickens. Keith, a local smallholder and friend, has been helping – he keeps chicken, ducks and geese. We shred all our paper and normally put it in the compost bin but when I get the chickens I will use it for nest material. I need to get a few more bits and then I can get the chickens. I'm really excited about my Chickens. I will be putting photos up when I get them.Laugh

Always remember Annmarie, to give all your chooks protection against Avian flue! We did!

Alas we no longer have chooks! Or sheep! or Piggies, or grapes, peaches, manderines, hazelnuts, walnuts etc etc since we moved. Sometimes we sort of regret moving 4 years ago, but the workload was a bit much for us old codgers!

I don't get a newspaper any more, Doreen. They are just too depressing. I think it's been 8-9 year since I last got a paper. I watch the news on TV and catch it online if I want to know something in particular.

Well I'm going to see some chickens tomorrow. They have just started to lay so I should get eggs straight away once they have settled into their new home. I read that if you urinate around the chicken house and run it helps keep foxes away. Is there any truth in that?Laugh

Speaking of such matters, we watched The World's Fastest Indian the other evening. Anyone who has seen the film will understand the connection. For those who haven't had the pleasure of seeing this wonderful film, the hero, Burt Munro, urinates around his lemon tree every morning. This is not actually true I understand according to his Wikipedia page, but no matter. Anyway, for anyone who hasn't seen it, it stars Anthony Hopkins as Burt Munro, a New Zealand motorcycle legend. Boy how the world needs men like him today. A real hero as far as I'm concerned.

It was an excellent film, Annmarie, and I'm usually very critical of films and rarely get motivated enough to watch the whole thing!

Well we have our Chickens. I have named them Dolly and Tammy. Dolly is very pretty I think. She is partridge colour. Tammy is gray and very shy. I'm sure when they get used to their new home they will be very happy.Laugh

No we won't get fluffy eggs. These girls could be on the stage. They are very funny to watch.Laugh I have to say I've not got much work done since we got Dolly and Tammy. We have built a temporary fence in the garden so they can't wander off into the field. We do get foxes around here unfortunately.Frown

It turns out Tammy is a cuckoo silkie. She has stripes. We had to move their roost higher because they were sleeping in the nest box. Tammy follows Dolly everywhere. It is funny to watch. I dug up some worms for them. Dolly will take them from your hand, but she has not got the knack of eating them Tammy on the other hand won't come and take them but she's more like a smash and grab merchant. She sees Dolly with one and the next thing she has stolen it from her and then it's gone. No messing about – down whole and still wriggling. They are a good pair. They get on very well. And they seem to like the area we have fenced off for them. They love hiding under the forsythia bush.Laugh

Sorry 'ME', I did not see the message you sent.Embarassed I am looking into your problem and my initial look shows that people are having a lot of problems with Explorer 9. I have a temporary solution – that is that you try Firefox or reinstall Explorer 8. I think there might be an upgrade for the forum. I will try that.Laugh
