I thought the bird might be an emu, but they are not native to the UK and I was not sure. I really don't know what to say about 'Big Red'.Embarassed

I'm sure if 'Big Red' saw that sign he would not be calmly eating the grass.Surprised

Well we have eggs. Dolly laid her first egg on the 22nd and so far she has laid an egg a day. None from Tammy yet. The eggs came just in time form my sister being here. I have taken some photos so you can get an idea of the size of the eggs. They would be called a small egg. 2 eggs = 1 medium to large egg. My sister made a lovely breakfast with them.Laugh

I have planted some raspberries and strawberries in front of the chicken run. I'm going to put a fence and gate up just the other side of the planting and I am going to move their house into the middle of that part of the garden. Dolly has laid 19 eggs in the last 20 days. I think that's good going. I think I might have to rename Tammy though. I'm beginning to think she might be a he!Embarassed

I did not realise that my camera took moving film, so I had a go. Here is my first attempt. It's of Dolly and Tammy. I have been training them to come when called. They are doing so well I think they could be ready for the Olympics next year but I'm not sure what event yet. Any ideas would be great and training could start straight away.Laugh

Well I can't believe it. I was sure Tammy was a boy. But she started acting strange about lunchtime and making a lot of noise and running in and out of their house. She is a girl – she has just laid her first egg. Happy days – I have 2 girls. Laugh

It's not easy to tell Annmarie!

(1960, The Bennett household, Rangitikiie Line, Palmerston Nth)

My father was no farmer but he loved the farmers life,

And he took along my mother as his devoted wife.

He rented an old homestead on Rangitikie Line

Weeds were up to the windows but he said, ”OK! That’s fine!”

He went off to work in town, while mother rolled up sleeves

Attacked the weeds, the windows and webs under the eves.

Each evening he came home again bringing useful stuff

Like little plants ,some garden gloves and once a box of fluff.

The box of fluff turned out to be half a hundred day old chicks,

“We’ll be self sufficient ”, he cried delightedly, “For in this mix-

There’s bound to be half hens for laying eggs- the rest we’ll eat“

The thought of roasted chicken drove out the thought of other meat.

The little fluffy yellow things all ran about in haste

We fed them crumbs and something we made up as a paste.

After 6 weeks we couldn’t tell difference between the girls and boys,

After 10 weeks we’re no better – deceived by chicken ploys.

At 14 weeks we realised their sexuality was plain!

Not a damned girl in there, not a single Jane!

Fifty bloody cockerels all cock-a-doodling fit to bust

All fighting fit, all testosterone, all fighting in the dust!

Each Saturday we’d pick the biggest and off would come his head

“X” minus 1, remaining cockerels would cheer that he was dead.

They felt no feathered ‘mateyship’ or camaraderie

They simply cock-a-doodled as loud as it can be.

Forty nine feathered fiends went in the baking dish,

Number fifty thought he’d made it and soon he got his wish.

My father, axe in hand went out the fateful day

To find that number fifty had gone and run away.

That is really bad luck – 50 chickens and not one girl. But at least they did not go to waste!Laugh

We have been Misty-proofing the chicken area. Misty is next door's dog. She got in to the chicken area 2 days ago. Dolly and Tammy are fine but they would not come out of their house for a long time and even now when Misty barks through the hedge you can tell they are not happy. We got a lot done yesterday (Sunday) but we had to stop at lunchtime because my older brother popped in with his wife. They had been on holiday down in Devon and took a slight detour to us on their way home. We have finished what we started on Saturday and it looks good.

I have been missing for a few days as my daughter was admitted to hospital for more radiotherapy, unfortunately the hospital is 170km away in Palmerston North. She is now back in Hastings with plenty of visitors and smiles all round, she has a little feeling back in her lower body and this is positive. She is now waiting to go into rahabilitaion for assessment as to her capabilities.

I drove past the Museum last weekend Michael, sorry I didn't have time to stop off and say hi, my son-in-law and I were on a mission. Smile

It is now our winter but to look at pictures like this you would be forgiven for thinking otherwise. I took this through the car window whilst travelling at 100 kph, I must add my son-in-law was driving.

I'm glad to hear the radiotherapy has worked to help relieve some of the pressure on your daughter's lower back.

I love the photo – it looks like a summers day. Here in the UK it's the wind that's the problem at the moment. It's simply wrecking the plants.

Dolly has gone broody and has not laid for nearly 4 weeks. Tammy is laying, she lays for 3 days and then has a day off. We were late home Monday. I had been down to Devon to visit my aunty. As soon as we got in we went out to check on the girls. It was 10.30pm and they had put themselves to bed. We locked up the house and checked for eggs. Dolly would not move. She had stolen Tammy's egg and was sitting on it. We prized it from her and put her back to bed.Laugh
