For anyone interested in professional cycling who may have missed last weekend's Tour of Flanders, I've just one thing to say. Beg steal or borrow a video copy then watch, enjoy and marvel at one of the great bike rides of modern times.
Fabian Cancellara, the Swiss Road Racing Champion and World Time Trial Champion, simply rode away from the field in a simply astonishing display of courage, power and commitment, notwithstanding the fact he had to stop and change his bike with 57km of the 262km race to go.
After an incredible 6 hours and 25 minutes in the saddle, Fabulous Fab, the Swiss cycling metronome, headed his nearest competitor by more than a minute, and the rest of the field by a considerable margin.
Simply astonishing. The best one day cycle race I have ever seen!

I don't know much about road cycling but I can always admire a brilliant sportsman. A lot of people think it's all fun! It's not! It's hard graft and a limited career span. Good for Fabian!

I agree, although I'm not sure that necessary follows for soccer players! Of course with professional cycling you also get the scenery which is pretty wonderful, for which reason one of my favourites has to be the Tour Down Under!

There are a couple here Tom, that seem to attract a lot of overseas competitors notably the Tour of Southland.

Wow, Cider, just look at that photo! http://www.tourofsouthland.com/. That's what I mean about enjoying the scenery as well as the cycling itself. Absolutely awesome, and that train is mightily impressive as well!

There's some dramatic scenery down south Tom. My wife and I hired a campervan a couple of years ago and travelled around the lower half of the South Island. I'll stick a few pics in the photo section. I particularly loved the West Coast where the old gold miners were, (and some still are!), it's a piece of history for us, particularly as we don't go far back compared to Europe. One of the things I like about working part time in a museum is I get to read about the early settlers and get a feel for the life they led.

Fab does it again. Astonishing. For the second weekend in a row the man they are now calling the greatest all-round rider of his generation simply demolished the rest of the field to win the prestigious 259km Paris-Roubaix race after six and a half hours in the saddle. The most impressive part is that he took off by himself with nearly 50km to go with such a massive burst of speed that no one could match him. He caught them all napping and at one time held a lead of more than 3 minutes over the rest of the peleton.
That is astonishing. His competitors could share the work. They say that one man riding on his own (or leading a pack) is working at least 25% harder than those following him or those who are within a pack of riders.
For anyone who doesn't watch cycling, you should give it a try. There's another major race this Sunday. Professional cycling is real gladatorial stuff!

I saw this man on our local television. He seemed to be a very pleasant person.
He was happy at his success but wasn't boasting.

Yes, Doreen, in addition to be an exceptional athlete he also comes across as a very fine human being. Switzerland should be very proud of him
