We have been busy in the front garden. It's mainly laid with gravel for parking and there was an area of shrubs that was overgrown. We thought it would be nice to put a seating area there because it gets the sun when the back garden is in shade. I do intend to put some raised beds in as well because at the moment we could get 6-7 cars on the drive and you only need space for 3. I will put some before and after photos up tomorrow and you can see how far we have got so far.Laugh

I know what you mean Marie Ann, over the weekend we had the same problem. However, all the effort was well worthwhile.

Oh Damn, I've been found out. How do you like this pot plant?

Nice garden Marie Ann, I bet that took a few hour's work to bring to fruition. Laugh

Love the planter but what are you going to do for a toilet now?Confused

You're right 'ME', we have spent a number of hours working on the front garden. I even roped my sister in when she come over for the Easter break. I have to say I watched while my sister and husband toiled. It was very hard going. They had to use a pick to break up the ground. The gravel was very compacted from cars driving over it. It's been worth it though. It's a great sun trap and it's not as windy as the back garden so it's great this time of year when the wind has still got quite a bite.Laugh

We had a visitor in the garden this afternoon, a Monarch butterfly that sttled on some drying washing. These are very large creatures and I fear this one was possibly on its last legs, it was 12 cms (5 inches) from wing to wing, and lovely with it.

I've taken some photos of some of the plants I'm putting in the front garden. One is an aquilegia, one of my favourite spring flowers. The only problem is I can't get the right colour when I take a photo. Here are 2 photos and neither are right – the second one is nearest. But the first one is the better photo. The muscari or common name grape hyacinth has come out quite well but again the colour is not quite right. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong when I've taken these photos to get the colours so wrong. Let me know if you have any thoughts.Confused

At our last home we had a huge bed of grape hyacynth, they are a lovely plant but boy can they spread. I have a very large tub of bluebells we brought with us to our new home, they will planted out before long all ready for the spring.

We are only 23 days from the first day of winter and yet our weather is almost summerlike. Our daytime temperatures are in the early to mid twenties, some eight degrees above what is considered normal for this time of year.

I am beginning to comprehend the enormity of global warming, it certyainly seems that way in our neck of the woods.

Okay, who's pinched Doreen?

I know the grape hyacinth can be a bit of a thug but I don't mind that. I just dig up any plants that have seeded where I don't want them and put them somewhere else or give them away. In the garden our plants are about 3-4 weeks early, and nothing is normal about our weather right now. There is definitely something going on. I don't know if it's global warming or what it is.

On TV I saw some cycling from Switzerland and the weather looked lovely. I think Doreen is out and about enjoying it.Laugh

Doreen once had a keen interest in the bicycle shed, I never actually new she sometimes rode a bike.

I have just spent 48 hours away, I had to collect my daughter who had been taken unwell. I took some pictures or some rather nice flowers whilst in Rotorua, hopefully I can upload them to my PC in the morning.

I took these pictures in Rotorua on Monday.

This is the centre of the Yellow flower at the start of this post, it's rather intricate and somewhat special.

Sorry, Marie Ann, I meant to explain: my daughter is to be accessed for her needs in the next day or so as she will never walk again. The cancer around her spinal cord is putting pressure on the nerves and she has lost all sensation in her right leg, and very limited movement in her left leg. She now has a future that will see her confined to a wheelchair but that won't damage her sense of humour. Laugh

The flowers are amazing. The first two flowers are Hibiscus flowers and the yellow flower is quite stunning. In my old garden I had a Lavatera Tree (Mallow) which is from the same family as the Hibiscus. I liked it because it encouraged bees and butterflies into the garden.Laugh

I read your post yesterday 'ME' and I have to say it made me feel very sad. I remember you telling us about your daugther and her illness but I assumed that the treatment for the removal of the tumour was what might put her in a wheelchair. I had no idea that it was getting worse. I am so sorry. Is there anything the doctors can do?

Absolutely nothing, Ann marie. It's quite rare to have a cancer around the spinal cord and the area is far to delicate for extensive surgery. Annette has experienced two courses of radiotherapy and that is her limit, it is feared that any more will damage the spine itself. She is in constant pain with her back so the spine may already be damaged by radiation.

Anyway, enough of the down side, the last thing she needs is for people to feel sorry for her. Once she gets her wheelchair there will be no holding her back, she will expect mag wheels and racing colours and everyone to get out of her way. In other words a typical woman driver. Laugh

I have to say Annette is an inspiration to us all. What do you mean woman drivers?Surprised If we are so bad how is our insurance cheaper than men's?LaughLaughLaugh

You should be very careful on that statement. It is not cheaper in New Zealand, following on from the requests of the fair sex, we have equality and that means we all, both sexes, pay the same.

The last trip I had across the Tasman, on March 22nd, was by far the bumpiest flight I have ever experienced, for about thirty minutes it was extremely uncomfortable, so much so I nearly spilled my gin. The captain of the Boeing air bus was a young lady, I would guess to be in her later thirties, blond and very attractive. It was my wife who mentioned no wonder it was a rough crossing, we had a woman driver. Laugh

At the moment it is cheaper for women in the UK, but they are going to change it here soon. We all say women drivers, but men are as bad.Laugh

Well I have had a saga today. I purchased a table and chairs for the front garden and paid a little more than I was going to but I really liked it. I get home only to find no table, just the chairs. I rang them up and they apologised and said that and if we go back to the shop the table will be waiting in the collection area. We do that, then have lunch and decide to put the table together only to find that there are no fixings to enable us to assemble the table. We are now waiting for them to ring back so we can go and collect them. To make it worse, it is a 20-mile round trip to the shop. It is nearly 5pm now – the worse time to go out with all the traffic so I think it will be tomorrow before we get it put together, after our third trip to the shop.Yell
