Anyone else noticed the paucity of woodpeckers this year? This time last year, as with previous years, we had an entire family of great spotted woodpeckers visiting our bird feeders several times a day. Right the way through previous years we've had as many as three of these beautiful birds in our garden at the same time, not all from the same family. Yet this year, we've had only two sightings since spring. Has anyone else noticed this decrease?

I haven't seen a woodpecker for ages now you mention it. There must be a reason for this.
Glad to see the robins re-appearing though, bolshy little beggers that they are!

Good news. Our woodpeckers are back at last. We've had three sightings in the last three days – one male and one female on each occasion. They're easily distinguishable if anyone's interested – the males have a red blotch on the back of their head, the back of the female's head is all black.
Why is it I wonder that male birds seem so much more attractive in relation to the females?
