Wreath Making
A Third Age Artistic Pursuits feature
by our Interests, Hobbies & Pastimes Editor

Contrary to popular belief, Wreath Making is not simply a one-season pastime. Yes, Christmas might be the time when most people will hang a wreath on their front door or in their hallway, but Wreath Making is a pastime that can be practiced all year round using standard materials available from Wreath Making suppliers, or freely available seasonal materials collected from your garden or the countryside.

Wreath Making is an ancient craft. The Greek god Apollo is associated with Wreaths, which inspired the Greeks to use Wreaths as crowns of victory at their Pythian Games, a forerunner of the Olympic Games.

The Romans also wore Wreaths as a mark of celebration, and it was the Romans who first introduced the tradition of  Funeral Wreaths.

But today, Wreaths are used on many occasions including Weddings, Funerals and seasonal celebrations such as Christmas and Easter. They’re also used as year-round decorations throughout the home.

One of the great things about Wreath Making as a hobby is how little you need to spend to make a start. All you need is a Glue Gun or two (different sizes for different applications), Glue Sticks, Floral Wire, Florists Tape, Florists Picks, Florists Pins, Wire Cutters, a Ruler and a Measuring Tape. Those few items should see you up and running for little more than a few pounds.

Wreath Making materials can easily be sourced from the many specialist Wreath Making suppliers. Or if you want to make a really inexpensive start to the hobby, from seasonal materials found in your garden, on the beach or around the countryside.

Making Classic Wreaths: Designing and Creating for All Occasions by Ed Smith, is an excellent starter book on the subject of Wreath Making.

These wonderful Wreaths go far beyond Christmas decorations. Crafted from pinecones and seashells; autumn leaves, berries, and pumpkins; and even styrofoam, they add a beautiful touch to any room all year long.

They’re easy to make too, especially with instructions that carefully outline the basic supplies and show how to make an attractive bow, wire items to the Wreath, work with dried materials, enhance pre-made Wreaths, and more.

Fashion a lovely seasonal Wreath from spring pussy willows and forsythia. Just for fun, use recycled toys on a Wreath or “Wreath around the clock.”

Wish someone a happy birthday with a Wreath adorned with party hat horns and bright ribbon. One “seedy” wreath is for the birds. They’re all creative, unique, and fun to make. Enjoy!

Income and Business Opportunity:
Wreath Making can easily be turned from a hobby into a part or full-time Small Business Opportunity by setting up a Wreath Making Business to provide a Wreath Making Service.

Wanting to keep the wheels turning here and not knowing what to write on this sunny Sunday morning.

I have finished with Tripe and  Pepper and Peppermint was a bit daft.

I looked into Hobbies and Past times, what a lot of interesting post on that site.

I first looked into “Letter boxing and had no idea what that was.

For me that is Orienteering Lauf. Yes i used to do that when I ran  a Girl Guide group, it was fun.

Now I have landed on this Wreath Making site. What a good idea.

I am going to try that for they would look attractive hung in my Yard.

I feel sure that my Neighbours would want one .

I have to go out this lovely Sunday, an invitation to lunch.

I will take my camera with me and see if I can Snap.Surprised

It's a very busy life you lead, Doreen. I don't know how you find the energy!

I'm glad the sun is still shining with you. Yesterday we decided to create a new sitting area in the front of our garden which is also our drive and the full width of the house. So I started to clear away some shrubs in one corner and to prepare the ground for some new shrubs to create a screen. I was really looking forward to continuing today, but guess what? RainCry

And…. your life is much busier than mine.

I do wonder who looks after Petal and Rosie.Surprised

Rain I could do with some of that. I am watering the garden.

Also a day working inside would be useful.

Catch you later.Laugh

Christmas wreath

Last year (2009) I made a wreath for Christmas to go on the front door. It's not very good, but it was a lot of fun. I hunted around the garden for ivy and holly and both the garden and the house for anything else I could find to add to it. I put an apple, an orange and some cinnamon sticks on it. Next Christmas I'm going to try again and see if I can make a better one.

That's a really good idea, Doreen. I'm going to get a box to put the bits and pieces in. Then at Christmas it will all be together.Laugh
