Has Ciderman or ME been to Phillip Island (Penguin Island)? Last week I saw the first of 6 episodes of a TV programme about the island. It was very interesting. During the episode we met some of the residents of Phillip Island whose homes have been reclaimed by the government to make way for a penguin protection zone. It must be hard to have to leave your home like that. One lady had been living in her home for over 25 years. It had beautiful sea views. It must be hard. They must have been compensated for it presumably but it's not the same as if you have chosen to move. The second part is tonight on BBC1 with Rolf Harris narrating.Laugh

Seems a bit draconian for what seems to be a very commercial operation. They even have a Grand Prix circuit!

I hope they were suitably compensated for removal. I think I'd rather wander the streets in the evening at Oamaru.

Yes, from the programme on the BBC I got the impression that it was all about the tourist industry and tourism was the most important thing and the Penguins bring the tourists. And hard luck to anyone who had a home or holiday home on this part of the island. With what I've read on the internet the residents of Summerland have been treated very badly and they did not get market value for their properties. And even worse, the authorities forced the prices down by stopping the owners from doing anything to their properties and stopping them from selling them to anyone. It when on for 20 years apparently. The government did not want to compulsorily acquire the land because it would cost too much. I didn't know it had a Grand Prix circuit but my husband remembered it.

Ann-marie, I was quite concerned when you asked if Michael or Me had been to Phillip Island. Not only have I never been there I have never heard of the place … a hasty Google put Me to rights. The place belongs to Australia, whew! Thank goodness.

It may seem hard to understand but in both Aussie and New Zealand if we have an endangered bird or animal, both countries will shift heaven, earth and people to safeguard the creature's future. I am not aware if the local penguin is on the endangered specie list, but there will be a good reason why this seemingly drastic step has been taken.

And there was Me thinking a Penguin was a very tasty chocolate biscuit, which sadly are not available here in NZ … or Wagon Wheels. Laugh

I have to say I forget how far apart New Zealand and Australia are. I think of you being next door neighbours. I keep forgetting there is so much sea between you!

If I had your address 'ME' I would post you some English Chocolate. I bet you're not allowed to send food. Is there a food or drink you can't get that you really miss? This is for anyone who once lived in the UK but does not now.Laugh
