Due to UK censorship, it may have passed most people by that today, 23rd April, is St George's Day!

I knew that! Do you get a holiday for it? I can't remember.

Cider, far from it. It's become a dangerous thing to even mention it in the UK. I wasn't joking when I mentioned censorship in the UK. It is rife!
St George's Day is still celebrated in isolated pockets of the country, but you'll find no mention of it on the BBC website for example and it rates barely a mention in the national newspapers. It's all part of a ploy to have it removed from the calendar altogether, which believe me, is only a matter of time. We are such a diverse and divided nation now, anything related to patriotism is confused with racism

St. George isn't only yours, he is also the Patron Saint of the village where I live.
The flags were hanging out today.

Nice one, Doreen. I'd love to have seen a photo of that. Didn't see a single flag here, and certainly not on the BBC I'm afraid. St George is simply not considered PC in the UK today

I think it is an awful shame that Britain is loosing it's Identity.
My roots are England and my maiden name is so very Yorkshire.
I was very fortunate when I met my Swiss husband who I loved from the day I met him
until the day he died.(and still do)
I have both British and Swiss nationality but my way of life and thinking are now Swiss
and Switzerland is small but a very democratic country.
There now, my history for all the WWW. world to read.

Thank you Doreen. I had wondered how you came to be living in Switzerland but couldn't bring myself to ask.

I love the idea we have a Saint in common with your village. It's like having a little bit of England in Switzerland.
I can't imagine what it's like losing your husband. It must be the worst thing in the world. It made me quite sad when I read it. I'm a romantic at heart and I love a good love story. Yours sounds like one, to leave England and move to Switzerland where you know only your husband must have been hard. It's not like today when you can communicate easily by phone or over the internet. To speak to family would have been hard I would imagine. Most people didn't have phones, and presumably you would have to have kept in contact by snail mail. And presumably it would not have been cheap to travel as it is today.

No censorship here, Gorgon. If you have something meaningful to contribute, you are more than welcome. All we ask is that you are respectful of other members and 'add' something to a thread rather than post for the sake of it.
