Interests, Hobbies & Pastimes are important, not simply as a means of passing time, but because of the mental stimulation they provide and the possibilities they open up for social interaction.

But for many, such things have had to take a back seat during their working lives when more pressing issues such as work and raising a family have taken precedence.
