Blackwork
A Third Age Crafts feature
by our Interests, Hobbies & Pastimes Editor

Blackwork, also known as Blackwork Embroidery is a form of embroidery using only black thread which was popularised during Tudor times where it was used to decorate clothing and later to embellish household items such as bed linen and cloths.

Believed to have originated in Spain, Blackwork is today enjoying something of a revival, particularly in the creation of samplers, chessboards and maps. Although modern Blackwork refers more to the embroidery technique than the colours used, the counted-thread technique remains essentially the same.

If you have an eye for detail, the patience of a saint and the desire to use your spare time creatively, then Blackwork might just be the hobby for you.

Best of all, it costs no more than a few pounds to find out if Blackwork might be the answer to your creative urges in your Third Age.
