Followers of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage television series will be familiar with his brilliantly conceived ‘Landshare’ scheme.
For those not familiar with the programme, the scheme endeavours to bring together landowners with land to spare with individuals desirous of growing their own produce but without the land on which to do so.
The scheme is mutually beneficial. Landowners see their surplus land put to good use. Potential growers secure land on which to grow their produce, and that produce is generally shared by all involved in the project.
At Third Age we would like to take this excellent scheme a stage further. Certainly if there are Third Agers with an area of garden or a piece of land that they would be happy for a fellow Third Ager to make use of, we would like to hear from them. We would also like to hear from any gardener or would-be gardener who is looking for land on which to grow their own produce.
But we’re sure it must be possible to extend this idea to other areas of interest by Third Agers forming interest-specific Third Age clubs or communities.
Take knitting for example. Knitting remains as popular as ever amongst the Over 50s (those of us in our Third Age). Wouldn’t it be nice if fellow Third Agers with an interest in knitting could get together with people of their own age to share ideas, patterns, information, etc, to their mutual benefit?
The same could be applied to any area of interest. That is what the Third Age website is all about. Bringing Third Agers together!
So if you would like to set up your own interest-specific community, do please contact us and we’ll see what we can do to help.
