According to a recent report, notwithstanding concern over the link between cancer and HRT, more than 80% of women going through the menopause are not being made aware about alternative treatments.
Carried out by French pharmaceutical company Phyto Soya, the survey concluded that almost half of all women with menopausal symptoms were prescribed HRT by their general practitioner, despite the fact that 50% of these admitted they had subsequently stopped taking HRT as a result of the concerns about long-term health.
The survey discovered that some 66% of those questioned took no treatment at all, preferring instead to suffer in silence, while more than 23% had decided to try natural therapies and more than 25% had endeavoured to alleviate menopause symptoms by making lifestyle and diet changes.
Interestingly, more than 80% of those surveyed thought that natural alternatives for treating the symptoms of the menopause should be available on prescription, and more than half were dissatisfied with their GPs initial consultation because it failed to provide more information on the various options available.
Experts in natural solutions to menopausal symptoms, Phyto Soya is leading the campaign to have recognised natural treatments available on the NHS.
