Firework displays will soon illuminate the skies during Bonfire Night celebrations. As we enjoy these festivities, it’s important to remember that this can be a very traumatic time for our pets. Loud noises can frighten animals causing them to panic, become disorientated, run away from home and potentially put them in danger should they bolt onto a busy road.
Claire Foster, Direct Line Pet Insurance spokesperson, comments: “Every year, cats and dogs suffer as a result of not being protected from the loud noises and bright flashes of light from fireworks. In an attempt to find refuge, some pets can escape from their homes or their owners’ grasp and become lost or, even worse, injured.
“Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for you and your pet. With a little bit of planning and forethought, you can enjoy the excitement of Bonfire Night and know that your animal companion is safe, sound, and enjoying a little peace and quiet.”
Direct Line offers the following tips on how to protect your furry little friend this weekend:
- Always keep your pets indoors when fireworks are being set off.
- Close all windows and doors. Draw the curtains and turn on the radio or TV to minimise and block out some of the noise of fireworks.
- Make sure you walk your dog earlier in the day before the fireworks start. If you must be outside with your pet, keep it on a leash at all times.
- Never take your dog to a firework display.
- Always make sure that your pet is wearing its ID tag or is microchipped in case it runs away.
- Provide a safe place or comfortable den for your pet if it becomes fearful or stressed.
- Pick up all firework debris after it has cooled down and dispose of it safely as it can harm animals.
- Act normal and calm around your pets and never shout at them if they appear frightened as you will only make them more stressed.
