With evidence that the Christmas we once knew and loved is fast disappearing come reports that our love of the festive season is diminishing at an alarming rate. As one national newspaper recently put it, Britain is turning into a nation of Victor Meldrews!
In excess of 50% of the Over 50s interviewed as part of a recent survey declared their view that the true spirit of Christmas has been lost.
That notwithstanding, those same individuals admitted to spending massive amounts on presents for children and grandchildren. Whether or not that will be the case this year remains to be seen.
We get the feeling though that many of us in our Third Age still love Christmas. What we hate is not Christmas itself but the way it has changed in our lifetimes.

That just about sums it up for me. There is nothing wrong with Christmas, it is what commercialism has done to it which is wrong.
I am often called Scrooge at this time of year, which I don’t mind, because he awoke to the reality of giving a little extra to the needy, not choking them with too much.
I love my memories of Christmas past. I will not see their like again.
